Useful computing tips

(Things you may have forgotten or perhaps were never told)

The following tips and instructions will hopefully be of use to you. Of course you can always ask a volunteer or trainer to help you with problems, but there may be times when one isn't available or when you would like to have a go at solving a problem yourself.

  1. Move the cursor to the bottom righthand corner of the screen. There is a little yellow loud-speaker icon to the left of the clock. The word volume should appear when you roll over it.
  2. You can now either....
....click once which will bring up a volume control slide for you to adjust
(close it by clicking elsewhere on the screen)

  File management
  1.Where to save your work

How you save your work is important to ensure that it is safe and that you can find it again next time you need it.
If you are on a WEVH taught course your tutor will probably have explained where you should save your work, but you can check below to make sure.

Saving work on any PC in the UKonline room.

Click File > Save.

Save in My
Computer > trainee on 'ukonline'(Z:). Create a new folder* in your name to save your work into. You will be able to access the work from any PC in the room.
* To create a new folder click on the Create New Folder button in the Save dialogue box

You can also save it in My Documents on the hard drive of your PC, again creating a new folder in your name, but it won't be backed up on the server and if someone else is on that PC next time you won't be able to access My Documents from another PC.

Saving work on computers in training rooms

Being updated

[Work should be saved in G: > home > trainee. The trainer usually makes a directory in here and the students save in that. Create a new folder in your name to save your work into. It's advisable to save a copy of your work on to a floppy disk, or in the My Documents folder on the hard drive.]

  2.Save or Save As?

Use Save the first time you save a file.

Next time you make changes to that file you can either use Save again which will save the file with the changes you have made ( but you will no longer have a copy of the original file)

or

you can use Save As which will save a new version of the file with the changes you have made (note that it will need a new name) leaving intact your original file with it's original name.

If you need help with finding information or a website address, you can go to a search engine such as Google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk) .Once you are in Google you can do a search by typing in a keyword(s) and then clicking the SEARCH button.

  The back and forward buttons

These are in the tool bar at the top of your page.

The back button simply takes you back to the page you were looking at before. That way you can skip back through all the pages you have viewed during one session, and go back to something that interested you earlier.

The forward or next button works in the same way, so you can single click on that to take you forward again.

You only need do a single click on the back or forward buttons to go back or forward one page. A double click will move you by two pages, so be patient.

(Please note: if you follow any of the links below you will need to click on the top right X button to return to this page)
