I am Chinese. My parents are from Hong Kong.
They emigrated to England over 40 years ago. After working in Chinese
takeaways and restaurants around England, they finally settled in Barrow-in-Furness
in Cumbria in the late 60's. Where they set up their own restaurant.
At the age of 7, I went back to Hong Kong with my family. This was my
first time of being in Hong Kong. We lived there for 5 years and that
was the time I learned to read and write Chinese.
From my background experience of being born and having lived in 2 very
different countries, I have become bi-lingual. When I came back to England
at the age of 12, I really struggled with the English language, because
the standard of English in Hong Kong is fairly low. I only learned one
English word while I was there and that is the word 'Perhaps'.
In contrast, art has always been my favourite subject and visual language
skills came very easily to me. In 1996, I went to the University of Central
Lancashire to study Fine Art. I am now working as a freelance artist and
I am living in Manchester with my youngest sister.
I completed a web design course at WEVH in Manchester in 2001. I have
always been fascinated by the possibilities of multimedia and have used
and developed these skills widely in various aspects of my work. I hope
to be able to continue to develop my skills and to work creatively in
this area along with my other art works.
The other reason I like to work in the multimedia
industry is because I'm fed up working in Chinese takeaways. It's boring
and it gives me wrinkled hands. Although to be honest it pays about ten
times as well as working as an artist.
