There
is a whole range of voluntary opportunities available through WICOP
@ WEVH; different projects, different tasks, short, longer term
projects, something to suit everyone.
Here
are a few examples to give you a taster,
- Designing
and developing web sites. For examples of projects the WEVH
have been involved in see Paws
for Kids and the Disabled
Living Centres Council
- Supporting
computer classes here at the WEVH, from beginners to more
advanced multi-media courses
- Doing
IT Audits for Community Groups
- Training,
one-to-one, one-to-two on basic office applications such as Word
and Spreadsheets.
- Helping
out at community events, talking to women about what IT can
do and about your experiences of IT.
For
more information go to our project page.
What
skills and experience do I need to volunteer?
You
do need to have a good level of IT skills/literacy, e.g. have a
knowledge of office applications and skills in other areas e.g.
the Internet, however what is just as important is a willingness
to learn and problem solve, to be open to develop new skills and
ways of working and to give things a go!
What
support can I expect?
We
encourage all volunteers to do projects they are interested in and
feel comfortable with. You'll get continuous support from
the Volunteer Worker Nikki Dearn and the Information Worker Cath
Dyson and other members of the WEVH team.
We
run one day training courses to introduce you to becoming
a volunteer, 1 day courses so you can develop your IT Skills and
the option to take a 12 week JEB Certificate in
IT Skills, an introduction to becoming a trainer.
Many
volunteers have gone onto work full or part time after their voluntary
work with us, as a member of our volunteer workforce you have access
to information about jobs and other opportunities.
I
want to be a volunteer - what should I do?
Call
the WICOP project on 953 4049 or e-mail Nikki Dearn nikki.dearn@wevh.org.uk.
You can have a chat with Nikki to find out more about what you'd
like to do and what is on offer and then we'll ask you to come in
the office for an informal chat.
